Birds of Northern California

As stated in the title, a field guide to the birds of Northern California.  Thorough, and well-researched, with color illustrations for every entry.  This book is much beloved by my entire family, and is now a very dog-eared guide to the birds of our local area (Coast Range Mountains just south of San Francisco). We have yet to spot a bird on our rambles, that could not be identified by using this book.  Highly recommended. (end review)

Amphibians & Reptiles of California

As the title says: a field guide to the reptiles and amphibians of California.  Thorough.  Well researched.  Colored illustrations, throughout.  A necessary reference for anyone engaged in nature study in the Coast Range Mountains of California. (end review)

Animal Tracks & Scat of California

As the title says: a field guide to the animal tracks and scat that one might come across during outdoor adventures in California. Thorough. Well researched. Colored illustrations, throughout. The book contains a great introductory section, which provides an overview of basic principles of tracking. It then offers a series of beautiful, photographic keys, to help identify what you actually see on the ground. Finally, there is a section that gives more detail for each animal, that would enable you to confirm or refute a preliminary guess. A wonderful reference for anyone wishing to know who, precisely, it was that so recently passed this way. (end review)

California Spring Wildflowers

As the title says: a field guide to the wildflowers and flowering shrubs of the Foothills, Valleys, and Coastal Areas of California. Thorough. Well researched. Contains a great overview of the plant communities of California, where one might find these flowers in spring. Colored illustrations, throughout. Flowers organized by color. The only downside is that, within a color, there is no clear way to find a specific flower, except by browsing through all the flowers in that color range. Still, a necessary reference for anyone engaged in nature study in the Coast Range Mountains of California. (end review)

Trees & Shrubs of California

As the title says: a field guide to the trees and shrubs of California. Thorough. Well researched. Most illustrations and range maps are black and white, though there are a handful of colored illustrations, in photographic plate pages at the center of the book. There are clear sets of instructions to help you sort through the entries, and find the information relevant to the plant you are observing, based upon your location, and the morphological  features of the plant. A necessary reference for anyone engaged in nature study in the Coast Range Mountains of California. (end review)
